Waste Water Operator 

The Wastewater Operator is responsible for operating, monitoring, and maintaining wastewater treatment systems to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations. This position performs routine inspections, collects samples, analyzes treatment processes, and adjusts equipment to maintain safe and efficient plant operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Operate and monitor wastewater treatment plant equipment, including pumps, motors, valves, clarifiers, filters, and chemical feed systems.
  • Conduct routine inspections of treatment processes and equipment.
  • Collect wastewater samples and perform laboratory testing and analysis.
  • Record operational data, meter readings, and laboratory results.
  • Adjust treatment processes and chemical dosages to maintain permit compliance.
  • Monitor Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems and respond to alarms.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs on plant equipment.
  • Troubleshoot operational issues and equipment malfunctions.
  • Maintain accurate logs, reports, and regulatory documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental, health, and safety regulations.
  • Assist with sludge handling, disposal, and related processing activities.
  • Respond to emergencies, plant upsets, spills, and after-hours operational requirements as needed.
  • Maintain housekeeping standards throughout the facility.
  • Participate in training and certification programs.

Required Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • State Wastewater Operator Certification A or B.
  • Knowledge of wastewater treatment processes, equipment, and laboratory procedures.
  • Basic mechanical, electrical, and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, SOPs, and regulations.
  • Proficiency with computers, SCADA systems, and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Associate degree in Environmental Science, Water Technology, Biology, Chemistry, or related field. 
  • Advanced wastewater opera or certification.
  • Experience with industrial wastewater treatment systems. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Understanding of environmental regulations and permit requirements.
  • Strong attention to detail and recordkeeping skills.
  • Ability to analyze data and make operational adjustments.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.

Physical Requirements:
  • Frequently walk, stand, climb stairs, and work in confined spaces.
  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and emergency callouts when required.

Working Conditions:
  • Exposure to wastewater, chemicals, odors, noise, and mechanical equipment.
  • Work in treatment plants, laboratories, pump stations, and collection system environments.
  • Compliance with all safety policies, procedures, and PPE requirements.
